It was nearing sunset when I was stepping out of a hospital. Yes, a hospital! Not that I'm ill, or anyone from my family, but as a part of my routine health checkup, I had to visit a giant health care unit today!
I strongly believe that, we, the humans, most intelligent creatures in this universe, are related to each other in one or the other way. Be it from Adam and Eve, or Brahma, the creator, entire population of earth is one family. You may like a few in the crowd, you may choose to stay away from a few. Truth is that, we all are from the same family, but we fail to recognize each other, we fail to understand each other, we fail to support each other and most importantly, we fail to respond to each other's emotions! This realization for me keeps happening frequently. More frequent these days.
Today, as I was waiting to meet my doc, I saw a woman being carried to the emergency room. The woman lying on the transport cot was terrified. I could see it clearly in her eyes, but I neither had time nor willingness to volunteer to stop and comfort her. A young woman, may be a few years elder to me, probably was terminally ill. No idea what illness, but she surely was prepared.
Birth and death have some similarities. They both are monumental occurrences that change your life forever. By the time I finished my work and was about to step out, I saw her little family of two kids with her husband taking her back home in an ambulance. Near the ambulance door, her husband was trying to assure her she'd be fine. But, she said 'No. I know I'm going home to die and I'm perfectly Okay with it! And you should be too...!'... Statement was followed with a smile!
That smile! I can really not define that smile. Was that a sign of preparedness?, strength?, content? or happiness that she's finally being freed of all the pain?! For a second, she did not look like a patient to me! Definitely not like a person about to die!
She taught me a great lesson: Being in good health doesn't just mean the absence of a disease or infirmity. Instead, it's a state of mind. It's a state of complete emotional and social well-being. At this hour of her final journey of life, before the ambulance doors were closed, she turned to her kids and with the same sparkling smile said 'take care of your body. It's the only place you can live in'!
I can never forget your smile. Take Care!
